yesyesYES!

i have only ever heard ONE good argument against fanfic, and that wasn't even exactly against fanfic; it was Laurell K Hamilton, and she said "please don't send me fanfic as my contract with my publisher says that i have to prosecute "attempts of intellectual theft". that's not an exact quote, except the attempt of intellectual theft line, it was a looooooong time ago on her forum. and that one makes sense - she said "i don't care if you do it but i can't see, if i see it i have to do something about it". it's one of the things i actually like about LKH (she drives me batty sometimes with her sex issues, and the way she talks about them incessently. of course, i could stop reading her blog, but where's the fun in that?)

i met Eric Flint at MarCon a few years ago, as i think i've mentioned before. now there's a guy who took fanfic and made an industry out of it! and it's NOT new - i remember Thieves World, and CJ Cherryl had Merrivogan Nights (or however its spelled) and there are DOZENS more.

this was a good post :) i don't write fanfic, but i have been considering it, because i can't seem to make my characters REAL to anyone else, and i have this short story and i want to send it in but my characters aren't good, so i'm thinking that fanfic, where i know the characters really well and the setting really well, would be good practice.

also: i finally got a new copy of Digital Night, it's in my pile of reward books for after mid-terms. i think we need a sequal! pretty pretty please :)
