The subtitle "A Romantic Fantasy" is meant in the "Romance Novel" sense of "Romantic".
And the major reason that it's embarrassing that THIS was the story that my brain would not let me NOT write is that it is a total Mary Sue -- or, rather, Marty Stu -- adventure. I.e., the Hero is a very, very thinly-disguised version of me. (disguised mostly by having a different name and having followed a different career path so that he's in a different life situation when everything starts.)

The books read pretty well for me these days; I re-read them to my son a year or two ago.
