Still sucky, but not quite as sucky...
... going back and forth between repair shops I got the cost knocked down to about $2300 instead of $4300.

That still sucks, but $2,000 less is better than the original cost. Will you be without your car for long?

About a week. Head gasket blown and need to replace the timing belt, water pump, and associated stuff.

Still Ick. Ah well we need our vehicles to work since we don't live in small villages anymore.

Ah yes, timing belt. Engines used to have timing chains instead of belts, they didn't break nearly as often.

Engines also had water pumps that were separate and easily replaced. And didn't require a trained electrical technician, or a black box, to diagnose or repair.
