And the major reason that it's embarrassing that THIS was the story that my brain would not let me NOT write is that it is a total Mary Sue -- or, rather, Marty Stu -- adventure. I.e., the Hero is a very, very thinly-disguised version of me. (disguised mostly by having a different name and having followed a different career path so that he's in a different life situation when everything starts.)
You're welcome to ask questions about it, though if you're REALLY curious you could just join my Beta-reading community rykspoor_beta and then you'd see the whole thing. :)
The books read pretty well for me these days; I re-read them to my son a year or two ago.
