I will be leaving Facebook...

In a few days. I'm giving it just long enough so anyone who contacted me there can hear about it and come here, or to Baen's Bar, or just visit www.grandcentralarena.com occasionally.

Why?

Well, because they've been increasingly annoying and intrusive to the point that they make LJ's hijinks look positively upstanding and respectable. as you can see here.  (Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] threeringedmoon )

Since, unlike LJ, I never invested any of my money there, and, unlike LJ, Facebook is totally unsuited to my general method of writing and communication, I probably won't miss it much.

Thanks for a good link. I have a semi-inactive Facebook account purely because it's so popular with my extended family - it's been useful from that point of view now and then. When I heard the latest privacy ramp, I decided to go and hollow my profile there of anything anyone who doesn't know me could conceivably link to or care about. I'd like to get off their damn' grid altogether, but I haven't yet figured out a good alternative for that part of my network.

Ultimately it's going to be about persuasion, and the article contains some useful grist for that mill.

I didn't realize this until today when I went back to look at the conversation we had on Jim's page about the nature of alien life and found your comments missing.

I was disappointed; I was hoping we might end up in a similarly interesting conversation someday. But I completely understand your reasons. Many folks are dropping FB.
