I will be doing three separate stories this PSTPWD. None of them will be complete, which is why I'm giving pieces of three. One will be roughly one-third of the fantasy novel "Fall of Saints" (which will include the excerpt posted last year as a separate story, the one featuring the toad Poplock Duckweed). The second will be a large chunk of a background story for Grand Central Arena -- the story of Marc DuQuesne's creation, the life he THOUGHT he had. The third will be a large piece of "Polychrome: A Romantic Fantasy", the story that took over my writing brain and forced me to finish it.
seawasp: (DuQuesne Ready for a Fight)

The first thing I'm posting today is an origin story, part of the background of the character Marc C. DuQuesne in Grand Central Arena. If you haven't read GCA yet (either as an electronic copy or the part I've posted in snippets, and you don't like spoilers, then you don't want to read this.

Onward to the spoilers... )
seawasp: (DuQuesne Ready for a Fight)

SO we continue with DuQuesne's origin...

I will fear no spoilers... )
seawasp: (DuQuesne Ready for a Fight)

We continue with Marc's life...

The plot thickens. Use plenty of cornstarch. )

The problem with an artificial universe is that it would justify paranoia. The universe IS out to get you.

seawasp: (Marc C. DuQuesne)

This is the last part of Hyperion Origin that I'll be posting; it is still a work in progress.

When last we left Our Heroes... )

Note that the "Tarellimade Shantrakar" mentioned by our unnamed voices is another Hyperion, but one based on a character that's well-known in the Grand Central Arena timeframe, but doesn't exist yet. I'm cheating somewhat just by having a considerable proportion of the Hyperions be characters that could be known to us 20th-21st century types, rather than being mostly from entertainments and stories created centuries from now.

Fall of Saints is the first volume in a projected trilogy titled "The Balanced Sword"  (the other volumes tentatively titled Demon, Dragon, Hero, Toad and Promise of the Dying God). It takes place in the same universe, and roughly at the same time, as Digital Knight, but on the World of Magic, Zarathan (which is mentioned once in DK, by Eonae when she's speaking to Verne in his flashback sequence in "Viewed in a Harsh Light".) I posted one section of this novel, the one featuring the first appearance of Toad adventurer Poplock Duckweed, last year. That one will be included in my posting this year, but will be in context.

So onward...

Begin the adventure of Fall of Saints... )

I like Aunt Victoria.

seawasp: (Kaos)

Continuing onward...

There was a mystery to investigate... )

And we meet the second of our main characters...

seawasp: (A wise toad)

Yes, he's back!

I toad you he would... )

And now onward!

seawasp: (A wise toad)

Time to see what that plan of the little toad IS...

Fear him! )

And isn't that ALWAYS the case?

seawasp: (A wise toad)

And to someone we have not met, and probably don' t want to...

But we do need to see certain things... )

Indeed we shall!
seawasp: (A wise toad)

And a bit of time passes...

Another party, not the one mentioned previously... )

An interesting sequence...

seawasp: (A wise toad)

And back to the greatest of our heroes...

Taking care of business... )

I... suspect I would be, too.

seawasp: (Default)

And our heroes must go to a bar!

It's Miller time?  )

And we begin to see how Kyrie actually will be brought front and center...

seawasp: (Kayura)

Back to our heroine...

She has some duties to perform... )

And a sad farewell...

seawasp: (Default)

And the last piece of Fall of Saints I am posting...

A journey to wonder... and perhaps destiny... )

And so I end my preview/partial posting of Fall of Saints; that's roughly 1/3 of the book as currently in submission to Baen.

This last chapter contained one of my favorite scenes ever.

Amazon.com now has the first review of GCA up, and it's an excellent review!

Now I have to hope most of them will be good. :)
seawasp: (Polychrome)

Polychrome: A Romantic Fantasy is unique in my writing experience. I don't generally write romances (although I have no aversion to romance in my novels, as long as it doesn't get explicitly... intimate which I'm terrible with). Oz is a childhood favorite series of mine, but writing IN Oz was not really a concept I played with (especially after seeing that it appeared that DEconstruction of Oz, as in "Wicked", was the popular approach).

But the concept for Polychrome burst into my head AND IT WOULDN'T LEAVE. It started writing itself in scenes from beginning to end. And then it, in effect, took my other stories (which at the time included Grand Central Arena!) hostage; if I didn't write a chapter or two in Polychrome every week or so, I found I couldn't write anything ELSE.

So I started writing it. And not only was *I* uncertain, my beta-readers were uncertain too, especially since I knew from the start that it would in part feature an obvious Mary Sue (or Marty Stu) character. But as I had to get everything ELSE written, I had little choice. And to my surprise, and theirs, I think it ended up a very good story. I don't know if it can ever be sold -- Oziana of any type has a pretty limited audience -- but in any case, here I present the first part of Polychrome: A Romantic Fantasy.

Return to an Oz quite changed... )

I try to maintain the core spirit and essence of Oz in this story, even though I have considerable work to do in order to make things "make sense". I hope it works for the readers.

seawasp: (Polychrome color)

Continuing on -- Our Heroine has a job ahead of her. A big one.

And it's been a long time... )

Yes, that would be a good question.

seawasp: (Polychrome 2)

And what does she think of her new acquaintance...?

... as he was probably not exactly what she was looking for... )

Well, not a TERRIBLE first impression...

seawasp: (Windlash)

We probably don't have to ask what the putative Hero thinks of Polychrome...

... and what really matters is WHETHER he can think... )

Hmm. Maybe he can, a little.

seawasp: (Polychrome color)

Well, he's passed one test...

... but there's always another, isn't there? )

You know, I could think of a better way to say hello.

seawasp: (Ugu the Unbowed)

It's about time to check in on our Villains...

For every story needs one or two... )

Let's go straight for the difficult questions, shall we?

seawasp: (Default)

Time to get questions answered...

Even if the answers aren't ones you like. )

And NOW it's time to go to work!

seawasp: (Default)

Time to continue the training...

Wax on, wax off... )

And I just realized that this piece is insanity and bankruptcy: Section 8 and Chapter 11...

seawasp: (Polychrome Saesama)

Is the Hero learning anything, or not?

How does Poly see it...? )

Guesses are better than nothing at all. usually.

seawasp: (Polychrome Saesama)

The preparations continue...

It's not all just learning to swing a sword, you know... )

Yeah, it would.

seawasp: (Default)

Heavy lies the head, as they say.

So what bothers the conscience of the King? )

Wonder indeed...

seawasp: (Polychrome Saesama)

And let's return to the eponymous star of our tale...

... for the time has come! )

And he sets foot on the land of Faerie at last.
seawasp: (Ugu the Unbowed)

And it is, perhaps, fitting that we will end this, as we began it, from the point of view of Ugu the Unbowed...

A King, yes, but with a problem... )

Hard and dangerous... but is there something more beneath your surface, King Ugu?

Here I end my partial posting of Polychrome, roughly one-third of the way through. I hope you have enjoyed this unusual ride.

seawasp: (Default)
... counting this one, 31 posts in one day.

Now I think I'll let poor LJ rest.
seawasp: (Odin)

Ha! One more post! I'd forgotten to do my usual snippet in all this Pixel-Stained Confusion!

When we last left Joe Buckley, God had done a John Henry on him...

And you know that's gotta hurt... )

Even the Captain doesn't seem to appreciate the breadth of Our Hero's talents or his devotion to the mission.
