Oldie but Goodie
Dec. 8th, 2004 07:42 pmThis was originally put up QUITE a while ago, but it's still really cool.
If you are old enough to remember Hong Kong Phooey, and if you are familiar with fighting anime and/or Street Fighter, you will love

But where's the part where his cat saves him?
I...
Date: 2004-12-09 02:53 am (UTC)The original, in a sense, was a perfect distillation of everything that SUCKED about American Saturday Morning Cartoons -- the neato concept destroyed by incredibly stupid humor, the lame plot device of a hero who couldn't even save pennies in a piggy bank actually being a success due to some sidekick character, etc., etc., etc.
The fact that shows like that (and like many sitcoms) have been considered funny led me to conclude that I have a very picky sense of humor, and one that's easily overloaded.

Yep
Date: 2004-12-09 07:50 am (UTC)Sitcoms... are a bane. I mean really, I have a few people on AIM who always tell me how funny Family Guy and Futurama are, but when I watched the shows, they were these lame, brainless, juvenile pieces of junk that seemed like they were written by cynical high school students (I mean, one entire episode of Family Guy revolved around genital envy--how much more juvenile can you get?)

Date: 2004-12-09 06:33 pm (UTC)The only really GOOD American cartoons became pretty obscure or ignored, and often had hideous animation to make it happen that way (the Star Trek cartoon, for instance).

Date: 2004-12-09 10:44 pm (UTC)And Hong Kong Phooey was made in the 1970s, which was just a bad decade for cartoons in general... thats when if you wanted to watch cartoons, you had to either watch Archie, a variation of Scooby Doo, or Hanna Barbera superhero crap like the original Space Ghost.
Re: Yep
Date: 2004-12-10 12:02 am (UTC)The Street Fighter movie...
Date: 2004-12-10 12:06 am (UTC)The live-action so-called Street Fighter, with Van Damme, well, yes, that sucked boulders through a garden hose. The only thing worth watching in that was Raul Julia, who was clearly having fun hamming it up in his last role.
There was a Hong Kong film called "Time Cops" which was nothing more or less than a silly time-travel plot wrapped around an excuse to do a live-action Street Fighter movie. Which, despite silly special effects, kicked a fair amount of ass and had some excellent comedy in it too.

Date: 2004-12-10 02:45 am (UTC)If I had to make a complete list of American cartoons that should be available on DVD but aren't, it wouldn't fit in LJ's response size limit.
Re: The Street Fighter movie...
Date: 2004-12-10 03:14 am (UTC)the hong kong version of Time Cops sounds interesting.... may have to give a try to see if its in the video store and rent it.
Re: Yep
Date: 2004-12-11 01:49 am (UTC)I remember religiously watching the Star Trek cartoons while eating morning oatmeal. However, it's been so long, I wonder if I saw it nowadays if I'd still like it (or think man that was corny)
Re: Yep
Date: 2004-12-11 09:10 am (UTC)Cop: "How did you get all those box tops?"
Bullwinkle: "Well I eat a lot of cereal for breakfast."
Cop: "85,000 boxes full?"
Bullwinkle: "Well I like to snack before goin' to bed too."
Cop: "How come you never turned them in?"
Bullwinkle: "Couldn't make up my mind what I wanted!"
Cop:"What do you think, Chief?"
Chief: "He's either a criminal mastermind or a stupid birdbrain."
Bullwinkle: "Do I get a choice?"
