Okay, now I'm worried. Anything that can penetrate Sam's invincible armor of "I don't notice" and make him PANIC is *VERY* bad.

Yes, that was a very effective way to get the reader to worry. (Worked on this reader, anyway.)

And today we get the double reverse, where it appears Sam actually was displaying some rudimentary consideration and even planning on the fly. This just makes it worse, of course.
