I hereby promote Shana from Loyal Minion to Trusted Lieutenant. She has shown the proper energy and slavish devotion to achieve this exalted level. She just sent us some lovely clothes for Vicky, and a large assortment of Space Opera star atlases, including two which I've been trying to find for quite a while. Good work and there's a proper dukedom or something in your future once the plans of conquest move forward. :)

Date: 2005-04-16 05:04 pm (UTC)One of the things I loved about Space Opera was how they gleefully and unabashedly stole from classic SF. So you could have Mobile Infantry Lensmen fighting Space Nazis. Great stuff.
Lousy system, but great setting.

Date: 2005-04-17 02:01 pm (UTC)In the days I still adhered directly to the rules, SO's seemed a perfectly reasonable system that just needed a couple tweaks. As virtually EVERY system in those days needed *at least* a "couple tweaks", this made it perfectly good.
SO provided mechanics, and plentiful material, to handle just about anything (including the most extensive and useful psionic system made for about 20 years at least), and as you noted understood WHY people played these games and made sure that they stole from the best and made it all available to the players from the start.
