... a fine author of a number of books I have read (ranging from YA fantasy to Star Trek tie-ins), whose bank account was just emptied by persons unknown.

What you can do you will see at that link, but I'll repeat the vital info here for convenience:

"The bank will cover this expense when its fraud department has digested all the details. But meanwhile, the household is skint. So: if you feel inclined to spit in the eye of the nameless rogue(s) who’ve briefly ruined the domestic tranquility around here, I invite you you to go over to the Ebooks Direct store and buy something using the discount code DDGOTSKIMMED, which will give you 20% off whatever you buy."

So buy some neat eBooks and help someone out of a little crisis (the bank will eventually cover the loss).

I caught the news of that on Twitter yesterday. Ugh. I'd totally buy a couple of books on the sale but ... I don't own an eReader and don't plan to until the format war settles out. (Also until they make one that's solar-powered. My laptop is always running out of charge at the wrong moment, which is why I mostly use it on a desk, plugged in. Sigh.)

Her books are DRM free and available in open formats like epub, which can be read with lots of software on Macs, Windows, Linux, iFruit, Android, WebOS, and many others. Buy it now and you'll be able to read it forever.

EPUB in particular is “just” HTML in a Zip file (plus some extra files), so it is eminently convertible in the event that some other open format takes over in the future.

(But I think [livejournal.com profile] nebroadwe was saying that he simply had no device to read them on now.)

Thanks for a public service. Also, a note! Obscure Middle Kingdoms stories available there - I didn't know there were any, other than the Tale of the Five, which I loved. Yes, there is some really good stuff over there, especially with her husband Peter Morwood's yarns now added to the site.
