RE the New Who...

... I was uncertain about the new Doctor Who when I saw the first couple of episodes, for a number of reasons. The third one, however, was great. THAT's the old Who spirit, if you'll pardon the pun. I could see Tom Baker in that same episode, or Pertwee. The proper level of humor, of historical reference, of almost-makes-sense technobabble. If the rest of the season's like this it'll be well worth getting.

Shame Eccleston decided to cut out so soon, though. The Doctor is a role like no other. I think he may come to regret that decision in years to come.

The THIRD one? Funny, I thought that was the weakest of the series so far. It was the second and the fourth ones that made me really feel good about the show.

Maybe it's a difference in reasons we're watching, or the like.

The fourth I haven't seen; it shows promise in the preview, especially as it's a two-parter -- the equivalent of the old days' three or four parter -- and Who should be longer stories.

The second was weak. I don't mind them exploring new directions with the Doctor, but they didn't really have the time to set up a lot of things. They needed to allow time for his behavior -- which is really quite off-the-wall for any of the Doctor incarnations I'm familiar with -- to be explicated, they needed more time for us to familiarize ourselves with the setting and people, and we needed Rose to either take more initiative in certain things or to have some longer, and more interesting, talks with the Doctor.

As it was, it was a whirlwind SKETCH of what could have been a good two-to-three episode Doc adventure, leaving out some of the really necessary parts.
