When I was a high school sophomore, our English teachers (it was a combined English/social studies class with a pair of teacher who taught as a team) told us that they'd wanted to assign "King Rat" by James Clavell, but the school board had said they couldn't.
I was far from the only student who checked out a copy from the local library.
Not something I'd go back and read again, but I'm not sorry I read it.
