Date: 2014-05-19 04:46 pm (UTC)I don't think he's actually RELATED. They didn't, as far as I can tell, take the 1950s Gojira as backstory; there was no "oxygen destroyer" -- the story couldn't have been reasonably covered up. I think his name is merely a nod to the original.

Date: 2014-05-25 05:47 pm (UTC)Long version: the people who made this film remembered something important, something that Roland Emmerich forgot. This thing is simple. It's obvious, at least I would think it is obvious: giant monsters are the stars. You can have any kind of plot that you want, or not plot at all, and still make a good giant monster flick as long as the giant monsters are front and center.
Short version: they made a Godzilla film.
