Possibly the most impressive thing is, I don't think anyone's tried a setup like that before. Aiming for a trilogy has been done, but a bunch of stand alone movies leading to one huge movie? That was new.

As far as I know you are correct. There have been a lot of attempts at ensemble cast movies, a lot of attempts at series of movies, but I do not recall any prior attempt to make multiple independent films that then get all tied together with an ensemble film. COMICS have of course done this for generations (the big examples being the giant crossovers like Crisis and Secret Wars) but even there the plan wasn't present from the beginning; Marvel seems to have intended this from the start of the "Phase I" movies.
