iPhone Update...

... So far, I think it's a great little gadget. I'm slowly learning what I can do with this toy, and it's really neat. (I could also see that this could be a really cool handheld game device, if there's a devkit that permits it.)

I have one, and only one, real complaint:

WTF is it with these idiotic headphones? How the hell can anyone USE them? There's no way to keep them on your head, no way to make sure they stay in any position to permit you to hear things reliably, and sure as hell no way to enjoy music with them. Yet I see people wearing these things all the time. What, do the rest of you use epoxy to put them in or something?

Maybe someone will come out with REAL headphones that have the integrated clicky-control on them so I can use this gadget the way it's meant to be used.

You've hit upon one of the gotchas of owning apple equipment. They dont care how it feels or works, only how it looks. =)

You basically have to wedge earbuds into your ears. I don't have an iPhone, the the iPod earbuds are similar. They stay in my ears just fine, but I have to kind of wedge them in.

One of the complaints about iPhone 1.0 is that they don't support bluetooth stereo headsets.

If you want a good headset, I'd recommend Bose. Expensive, but excellent sound. Not their earbuds, but the on or over the ear models.

On a slightly side note, Leo Leporte called the iPhone the best iPod yet.

Wedge?

With what? A hammer? There's nowhere they could possibly be wedged. They're not designed such that they'd fit in the actual ear passage, and even if you could, they're not made such that they'd STAY there if you were to move your head as much as a few inches.

I suspect there's some people whose ears will hold on to these things somehow, and others, like me, where it's not possible.

The problem is that the iPhone headphones include built-in controls which work with the phone itself, but that no "real" headphones are available which have those controls.

... to the Rat, I already have headphones I like. I even have the adapter for the iPhone so I can use them. But they don't have the integrated controls of the iPhone headphones. My complaint was mostly about the assumption that all people will use those earbud things.

There is that ridge that runs across the ear just above the canal - no idea what it is called - I wedge it between that and the inside of the ear lobe.
