Strange weekend...
Jun. 1st, 2004 09:27 amMemorial Day weekend is when the folk music festival "The Gottagetgon", by the PSG ("Pickin' and Singin' Gatherin') is held. For most of the past, oh, 30 years I have gone there on at least one day of the weekend. While folk music is not really my bag, it has always been a family event that I attended partly to see certain people who I rarely get a chance to see otherwise, and partly because it WAS a family event; it was something we all did, getting together for a bit, having some food, playing some music, etc.
For the first time in a long time, I did not go. It struck me, this past week, that my father would not be there. It had been hard to go up in the past couple of years, with my mom gone, but the realization that this year there would BE no family campsite, no stack of penguins (family in-joke) waiting and watching, just an empty space or someone else's car parked where my mom and dad always used to camp... it hit so hard that I just couldn't do it. I ended up crying at work when I finally called my wife to tell her we weren't going.
OTOH, on this weekend I managed to get some writing time in. Boundary is now well over 30k words. I am making it a point to write at least 1,000 words per day even on weekdays from now on, so that I will finish it soon.
