Memorial Day weekend is when the folk music festival "The Gottagetgon", by the PSG ("Pickin' and Singin' Gatherin') is held. For most of the past, oh, 30 years I have gone there on at least one day of the weekend. While folk music is not really my bag, it has always been a family event that I attended partly to see certain people who I rarely get a chance to see otherwise, and partly because it WAS a family event; it was something we all did, getting together for a bit, having some food, playing some music, etc.

For the first time in a long time, I did not go. It struck me, this past week, that my father would not be there. It had been hard to go up in the past couple of years, with my mom gone, but the realization that this year there would BE no family campsite, no stack of penguins (family in-joke) waiting and watching, just an empty space or someone else's car parked where my mom and dad always used to camp... it hit so hard that I just couldn't do it. I ended up crying at work when I finally called my wife to tell her we weren't going.

OTOH, on this weekend I managed to get some writing time in. Boundary is now well over 30k words. I am making it a point to write at least 1,000 words per day even on weekdays from now on, so that I will finish it soon.

::raises a glass in toast:: To those who go before, and are sorely missed.

BTW, this is Brown Kitty from the Bar, just so you don't freak overly much at some stranger posting in your journal.

The reply started with "How did you find me?" and degraded rapidly. It wasn't directed at me. Since then, however, I've been kind of careful with people I haven't met in person.

So come out to Chicago ;) Either that, or come down to SheVaCon to see Jody and Chris get married! :)

Even with stuff out of your head, you have to maintain internal consistency, and think about the "side effects" of the way your world differs from the real world.

It's just that you have to maintain consistency with a 'few' more things. :-)

Oh, the speed of light is quite tweakable. You just have to lower the energy density of the vacuum.

Of course, that may have consequences you won't like, but...
