Over on r.a.sf.w, there was a thread on "Spectacularly Wrong" characters -- ones who say or do things indicating that not only do they fail to have clues as to what is going on, they resolutely refuse the ones offered so as to end in spectacularly deserved failure.

I have previously posted one of my favorite ones -- Assaj Ventress, speaking to Count Dooku.

Assaj: "...I am Sith."

Dooku: (having just landed from about 50 feet up, cushioning his landing with the Force) "You are no Sith. The primary characteristic of the Sith was that they knew now fear... and I sense MUCH fear in you."

Assaj: "You are a foolish old man who knows NOTHING of the Dark Side!"

Dooku (with an amused, raised eyebrow): "Oh, REALLY." (Fries Assaj with Force Lightning)

Well, last night I found another Great Spectacularly WRONG! line. I was watching Quantum of Solace (the latest James Bond flick):

Villain: (passes around a photo)"Do you know who this is?"
(after several people take a look)
Crooked CIA Agent: "... That's James Bond. British Secret Service."
Villain: "I need you to eliminate him for me."
Crooked CIA Agent (with a confident smile): "That won't be a problem."

I almost DIED laughing at that line.

I think Assaj Ventress is meant to be a bit of a fool -- in some ways, she's Asoka's Dark-Side counterpart -- female and way more confident than her skill level entitles her to be.

Now that I think about it, she kind of has the Vegeta problem -- she's a serious bad-ass, but she wants to be the bad-ass of the entire universe, and no matter how hard she tries there are several people who are just plain badder than she is.

Also it occurs to me, in re Bond, that the 2006 Casino Royale rebooted the Bond franchise; so in this particular continuity Bond is still relatively inexperienced and unknown. So I think the crooked CIA agent can perhaps be excused for thinking it wouldn't be hard to quietly take him down. If someone had said that of Bond in, say, Die Another Day, then yeah, they'd be in major need of a clue.

Sort of like a long time D&D (and related) gamer who got involved in a Traveller game.

The party got ambushed and there was a guy no more than six feet away covering his character with a shotgun. He tried to jump the guy.

As was explained to him as he rolled up a new character "In *this* game, guns can kill you"

I suppose if you're going to be spectacularly wrong, you have to survive a little while.

"It's just a toad."

First episode of "Angel" -- the vampire villain was after Cordelia when Angel crashed the party. Villain confidently threatens Angel.

Cordelia: You don't know who he is, do you? Ooh, you're going to get your ass kicked!
