In the trailers/forthcoming films for the near future I see:

Nine
9
$9.99

and

District Nine.

Any idea as to why 2009 is filled with 9 movies?

(For me, the answer is "Nein!"

Nein!

I may go see another movie -- but not one of those.

This year clearly needs a remake of "Plan 9 from Outer Space".

Will there be a sequel to the remake of Get Smart? If so, I expect it would be called Get Smarter.

Oh, OK. It could be called Ninety-Nine.

I'm actually a bit interested in District Nine, I must admit. It's a full-length expansion of Neil Blomkamp's "Alive in Joburg" short film, which basically took the premise behind Alien Nation and viewed it from a South African post-Truth-and-Reconciliation perspective. I don't expect it to get cute (and, please, no "aliens melt in salt water" crap) and it's probably not going to be a feel-good flick, but it could be interesting.

-- Steve'll caution folks that Blomkamp likes the shaky-cam, so those who weren't comfortable watching Cloverfield may want to stay away.

September is going to see 9/9/09; perhaps at least some of the filmmakers might be capitalizing upon an auspicious number lineup--much as the Beijing Olympics pointedly began on 8/8/08, and Hell, Michigan threw a big heavy-metal festival on 6/6/06.
