Wonderful. I expect to buy both of them. As e-books, but you know how I am about e-books.

On a related Pulpy note, I'm re-reading "Galactic Patrol" as a run-up to the "Middleman" DVD release. It makes sense in my head, anyway.

MiddleMan!

Also, Wikipedia

Like Kimball Kinnison, the Middleman receives cryptic aid from some force beyond his comprehension for reasons not entirely clear, but apparently benevolent. But the Middleman fights hidden horrors by and large, not the open forces of Boskone. So I'm also going to be interested in the response.

Oh, my. "Mark, bearing in mind that this restaurant closes in three hours, please advise me what kind of gun to buy." (Granted you don't know Mark, but do you need to?)

Middle vs Lens:

One, his speaking style. "Ghosts of the Living!" in place of swearing has a lot in common with Klono's etc. etc.

Two, his whole approach to the heroism business is so very very pulpish. (e.g. a situation where he has to fight 100 luchadores with his bare hands which I swear was blocked out with George Pal's "Doc Savage" on t.v. in the corner of the room.)

Actually, I'd go with listing the differences. Which are, (1) although the Middlewatch is a big chunky multipurpose communications device, it doesn't enable mind-reading or kill nonauthorized wearers. And (2) Girls are allowed to become Middlemen.

Oh, and (3) being set in the current world things like negaspheres and indetectable intergalactic speeders are thin on the ground. Although alien invasions have been thwarted several times.

OTOH, at least in season 1 we don't see the kind of rapid escalation of technologies I associate with Lensman and Skylark.

CotL (and Skylark Duquense to a lesser extent) show, in my opinion, that if a reanimated Doc was writing the series for the first time today he'd skip the 'sex based differences make a lens incompatible with the female mind.'

Incidentally, given that Arisians have weak immortality, is there any evidence that there exist female Arisians by the time of Kinnison?

You are right - 'weak' immortality is a poor description, especially given that as far as I can tell no Arisian perished in the 2 billion years of the war with Eddore.

I do recall that Arisians used to have gender, since all life in the two galaxies formed from Arisian spores and they all had two sexes. I was wondering, why, within the logic of the universe, women had a sex based aversion to the lens yet there were female Arisians. Your explanation could cover it.
