1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating. (I'm also crossing out any that, after eating them, I would never try again)

1. Venison (this one's REAL close to the cross-out zone. It's sucked 6 of 6 times I've tried the "but this time it's been prepared RIGHT!" versions. It stays uncrossed because, well, it's MEAT. Honest dead-animal muscle tissue can't suck that badly inherently, can it?)

2. Nettle Tea
3. Huevos rancheros
4. Steak tartare
5. Crocodile
(well, alligator. Close enough.)
6. Black pudding

Both the butchering and preparation are important to getting good venison. Even then it does taste different from a lot of meats particularly beef.

Incidentally I grew up with venison being the primary meat in our household, so I really like it. Even then I've had some from my father in law that I would charitably call "not good".

I wonder if there isn't a genetic component of taste that is affecting your opinion. similar to the genetic linkage to the flavor of cilantro.

Seconded. It's usually very lean, and has to be laced with fat to give it any decent taste.

You forgot to cross out Bellini - it's a cocktail.

venison - the ONLY venison i have ever eaten that wasn't "bad" has been either right there, roasted bits while dressing the rest to take home, or in a stew. i canNOT stand any other type of venison. and i've eaten *snake*, make the obligatory "tastes like rabbit - oh, that's because it just *ate* a rabbit" joke.

but whatever in the world can you find offensive in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? there are 40-jillion types of jelly and jam, and half as many types of peanut butter - there has to be *some* combo you like! no, really, i think this is a Fundamental Law...

Absinthe - the only taste other than "alcohol" (which i agree is a terrible taste - i can only stand a few alcohols, and even then, jello shots are still the best. sigh) is aniseed. black liquorice. oh, i have a friend that *swears* she can taste the wormwood, but i'm pretty sure that's just the alcohol, or maybe the *effects* - the aniseed is pretty damned potent. i actually generally can NOT taste the alcohol over the aniseed, and am sort of surprised you were able. but, honestly, it's costs too damn much for not much effect, so meh.

seriously - PN&J!?!?!? UNAMERICAN! i bet there's a clause in the Constitution about it, or at least the Patriot Act!!! (this is a joke)

huh. that is odd; i wonder why? interesting. that's why i hate beer and most wine, btw - all i can taste is the alcohol. there are SOME drinks that i can tolerate, but not most.

I actually loathe peanut butter, although I ate it as a very young child.

The only form in which I consume peanuts is in satay sauce, and even there I prefer the drier, peanut-as-spice satay than the goopy-sauce-with-bits-of-nut version.

Yeah, I pretty much loathe the taste of all nuts. I dislike a lot of foods, though, to be honest.

Like nettles prepared as a veggie, you change the water several times to to get rid of the formic acid.

#17 the parenthetical comment was a comment by me, not part of the meme
#22 the list of berries was a comment about which ones I've had

I am so glad to find someone who also dislikes the taste of alcohol in general. I detest most beer and wine, plus the frou-frou crap like wine coolers; if I'm going to drink, it's going to be a good Scotch or Whiskey. Usually straight-up, because if you have to swallow it, you ain't drinking real booze.

(This got me a declaration of eternal love from a prior-enlisted gentleman I used to work with, actually.)

(Okay, I also like Bailey's, hard cider, and several Linganore / Berrywine Plantation products.)

Very interesting that. I'm no huge fan of alcohol - it makes me feel sleepy and a little ill in any quantity, but I do like the taste of some.

Incidentally, the only venison I've had was when I mistook the ground meat patties in my boyfriend's freezer for hamburger and made them into a spaghetti sauce. :) We were both perplexed by the flavor -- definitely meat, but not beef -- until I told him which "hamburger" I'd used. Apparently, one of his neighbors shot a deer and gave the patties to my BF.

I have to say that the only way I enjoy venison is as jerky. OTOH, kangaroo is delicious!

Incidentally, you can find the original list as the Omnivore's 100 at the Very Good Taste blog. There's even a FAQ about the list and some analysis of many of the initial responses the list's creator received.

Oh, and a bias warning-- I'm one of the folks who submitted suggestions that made it onto the final list. :-)
