Calling it a volcano of oil, rather than a 'leak' or 'spill' helps put matters into perspective.

Now if only BP starts trying to fill/cover and put an end to the open pipe a mile down - covering that basin with a thick, solid layer of permanent sealer [whatever quickcrete works at a mile down] - rather than put in stop-gaps with a mind to continue harvesting oil from the spot. Maybe that can work.

Instead it's put a cap over it they can suck oil out of. That doesn't work? Then use a smaller cap. When that doesn't work? Stuff the hole with debris [so it can shoot out at speed & pressure ... rather than expand and serve as a plug] - and then dig a -new- hole to 'relieve pressure' so they can still get their oil. [sighing here]
