I was contemplating your essay on FanFic, and I had what I thought might be trenchant responses, and this thread blew all that away. The three words ended up being "FanFic" and "Sturgeon's Law."
Which is indeed the one clear difference between Fanfic and "realfic": you have to apply Sturgeon's law TWICE to Fanfic, because realfic goes through the first filtering in the slush, out of our sight.
"Lessee, 90% times 90% equals 81%... so FanFic is better?" (Hehhehheh)
Or did you mean that 90% of the remainder after the first 90% are eliminated are crap, too? (Effectively 99%).
Never mind, I read the essay. There's still plenty of RealFic crap that gets published because, well, there's a market for it. But a good Sturgeonistic percentage was winnowed out, which doesn't happen for most FanFic.
Which just goes to say (as vinnie_tesla is now loath to say in public*) "STURGEON WAS AN OPTIMIST".
