In D.D. Barant's new series, golems are produced by infusing pottery or stone or sand with an animal spirit, which gains a few IQ points in the process.

Construction worker golems are made with mule, horse or elephant spirits.

Security golems are often made with bulls or buffalo.

When the NSA custom specs a bodyguard/investigator golem, they go through thousands of tons of oil sand in order to recover a T. Rex spirit...

I've read the first one, _Dying Bites_, and it was very well written. Several times I stopped, thought about something, and marked it as something unbelievable -- and every time it turned out to be a plot point. The second one is out now (_Death Blows_) and I believe a third one will out at the end of the year.

I've passed them by on the bookstore shelves, the cover not grabbing my attention in the right way. Sometimes, I suppose I just need someone to describe Something Cool about a book for it to properly snag my imagination.
