... anyone have any feedback on what "Cross Edge" and "Atelier Rorona" are like? That is, are they good for the type of game they are (i.e., assume I like the general subgenre)?
JRPGs aren't really my genre but the answer is probably no. The review aggregator Metacritic scores them 52 and 67 respectively.
67/100 might seem like a decent score, but although most gaming site claim to score games on a 1 to 10 ( or 1 to 100) scale, the majority of games end up somewhere between 7 and 9 on that scale.
Games with a Metacritic score below 70 are very rarely worth playing.
I've played Cross Edge, it's a mediocre at best crossover game that just takes a bunch of characters from different games and puts them in a world with a lame plot. Note that it hits mediocre if you know the characters, which is unlikely since some of them are from games that never even made it over here >_>
While I haven't played Rorona, I've played a lot of the other Atelier games. They have a large focus on creating items via combining various ingredients. In fact, the main character usually needs to hire mercenaries if they go out to collect ingredients or help people as the main character is just an alchemist so just uses their items in battle :P
