PS3 people, help?

I have the excellent game "Dragon Age: Origins".

Problem: My son is playing it too, and he has reached a point near the end... and the game freezes.

Freezes every single time, near the same point.

I've done some searches and some mention a freezing bug, others a patch (but I haven't seen where I could download one), and some say there was a patch but it doesn't work.

I'd really hate to find that I can't actually finish this game.

(I also have to post reviews of this, Oblivion, Valkyria Chronicles, and partially a review of Star Ocean 4)

Well, this post in the Bioware forums claims they released a patch for the game to fix that problem. I'm not sure how patching works for the PS3... on the Xbox 360, when you load the game and your console is connected to the internet, it will notify you that a patch is available and ask if you want to download it. Is your PS3 online?

PS3 patching is unavoidable if you have an internet connection. It'll force you to upgrade before you can play.

Yeah, it's been online, and I haven't seen it attempt to patch.

Is it in the final archdemon battle? I got a loop point rather than a freeze there, when using the ballista the archdemon wouldn't move to come and attack me. More details?

It's leading up to the end battle, but he's still just fighting lots of mostly-mooks; it stops after he's gone up one stairway, and is just about to go up a second.

Hmmm. No idea, sorry, haven't encountered that bug. I have a fairly-new PS3, and it has definitely got itself updates from the web for DA:O a number of times - have been playing DA:O since the middle of last year.

I'd check the disk for scratches or smudges. I've never had issues with a game, but I have had a few DVDs that would freeze or sputter due to finger prints.

It is unlikely, but simple and easy to check for.
