Change.org has had a petition up to fight the idiotic "let's create self-destructing Ebooks for libraries" idea from Harper-Collins, and I signed the petition and appended my own little note; to my surprise they wrote back and asked me if I'd answer a few more questions.

More to my surprise, when they posted the actual article, I got more quote/screen time than anyone else!

While I don't always agree with Change.org, in this case it's a battle that's near and dear to my heart and I'm even happier I get my voice heard on it.

Good set of quotes from you too, I can see why they decided to use your commentary on it. Sums up the situation and real effects of it accurately, and the passion of your views comes across.

It's funny how Baen's Free Library (and I'm a person who's gone on from that to become a very reliable buyer of webscription titles) shoots down so many of the arguments about how libraries are a bad thing, on or offline.

Heck, now that I have some spare cash again, I'm buying webscription *months* rather than paper copies of Baen stuff. I've got too many books and too little space anyway, so this works well.

The hard part was creating a list of all the Webscriptions stuff tagged as to whether I have it from the Free Library, from one of the Free CDs or a previously purchased webscription. That lets me prioritize purchases.

Eventually, I plan to have all the Baen ebooks that I am interested in. I'll even hold my nose about the ones I really *don't* want.

It's annoying that there are several series where Baen doesn't have all of them available as ebooks.

Webscriptions For The Win

I tend to get the monthly Webscriptions these days, there is generally something in there that I want, and I often read stuff that I otherwise wouldn't have read if I had to buy them individually.

Does mean I also own some books I really don't care about, but hey, that happens, it's not like they are taking up physical space.

On a related note, I adore my Sony EBook Reader ... so shiny.

I use an iTouch myself. Fits my pocket, carries a lot of music and other useful things like my calendar as well as the books.

I've been reading things from the Free Library and buying Webscriptions from the beginning; these days there are frequently things I've already bought on the month's list, but generally there are just enough books I want that it's cheaper to buy the whole thing than pick them up individually.

Come to think of it, there are books in the Free Library that I bought before they fetched up there.

The article was good - your quotes were gold. It ended the article with a bang,

I buy books - rather a lot of books. I reread many of them. The ones I don't plan to reread I either donate to the local library or pass along to my science fiction club. The concept of the 'amazing' vanishing book fills me with horror.

Baen's history suggests that Seawasp is correct in his conjecture. Have a book, kid; the first one's free...

Excellent. My guess is they used your quotes so much because you're not just another author who's against it, you're an author whose experiences with the Baen Free Library directly illustrate the benefit of the opposite approach.
