You've all seen this one...

"If I made Cinderella, the audience would immediately be looking for a body in the coach."-- Alfred Hitchcock, 1899 - 1980

If I wrote Cinderella, what would you immediately be looking for?

(note: *I* am not going to think too much on this or I might start WRITING it and I have too many other things to write at the moment!)

I want a crossover between Cinderella and Terminators of Endearment. Or maybe between Cinderella and the Lensman novels.

... with Mentor as the Fairy Godmother (corresponding to Virgilia Samms' perceptions of mentor, of course):

"Know, young woman, that my Visualization of the Cosmic All indicates that in precisely four hours, thirty-five minutes and four seconds, that is, at midnight in your frame of reference, the fields of force which are holding these transformations in place will fail, and it would be well to have completed your task within that time frame."

Cinderella's first warning that something was wrong was the thunderous report of a shotgun going off in the front hall. The house erupted in screams and the noise of overturned furniture, punctuated with gunshots, and in moments was still again. She heard a meaty thud of something heavy and limp hitting the floor.

Then footsteps, slow and heavy, as of a single man.

Cinderella cowered under the side table, praying to be missed by whatever horror had invaded the house. She tried to stay silent. The kitchen door was smashed from its hinges and fell in pieces to the kitchen floor; she yelped in terror despite herself. She saw a pair legs in heavy boots and dirty trousers walk over the broken wood into the kitchen.

Suddenly the entire table was lifted away and the young girl was looking up into the expressionless face of the largest man she had ever seen.

"Cinderella," he rumbled. "Your stepsisters will not be coming. Go to the ball if you want to live."

Well, she'd have to be a lost princess or something. Which makes the stepmother and daughters kidnappers or worse.

Fairy godmother will be a lot more important and powerful, magically.

Probably an old prophecy or two running around.

Might be some interesting stuff going on with the prince too.

Of *course* the search with the slipper would involve the law of contagion.

I don't *think* you'd be crass enough to have Cinderella be his sister.

Ever hear "Red as Blood"? It's a filk about Tanith Lee's take on the Snow White legend. Snow is a vampire..

Someone else filked the tune and redid Red Riding Hood. With Werewolves.

I can dig up the lyrics to both and even send you an MP3 of Red as Blood.

The godmother is an alien, of course, the pumpkin is a trans-dimensional vehicle (organic, of course) and the Prince's Birthday Ball is a no-holds-barred free for all among all the eligible maidens for the prince's hand.

Can't wait.

You just don't have main characters who sit around and wait for somebody else to solve their problems.

The closest to that was Polychrome (in that she was on a quest to find a hero) and even then she went out and took major risks to find him, get him back, help train him up, and then kicked a fair bit of arse herself even after they had the 'foretold hero' show up.

And as suggested in other posts, the Fairy Godmother/Father is likely to be ... different.

The Fairy godmother to be part of a dastardly alien plot to use Cinderella to take over the world!

It's a mashup where all the fairy-tale stepmothers turn out to be the same stepmother; ditto for helpful fairies, evil queens, and so on.
