Lawrence Watt-Evans, one of my favorite authors, is trying to continue his Ethshar series through a variant of the "Street Performer's Protocol" -- i.e., he performs a bit, you pay him a bit, he performs a little more, you pay, etc. This has been tried by others with middling success.
