After much difficulty and confusion, it emerged that the problem was, in fact, the battery -- it was providing enough power for the starter to turn but not to engage with the engine.

Upon examination, it turned out that it was the ORIGINAL battery -- i.e., it had been doing faithful duty for about nine years.

I suppose I can't complain about that.
