While I've never read the Nero Wolfe stories (my mystery reading tended to be confined to Ed McBain's 37th Precinct series and obsessive re-reads of The Seven Percent Solution) I was rather fond of the AMC series based on them that aired a few years back.
The Seven Percent Solution but not the original Holmes stories?
Me, I thought The Seven Percent Solution was clever and not mean spirited or utterly wrongheaded, but I didn't like its take on the Holmes canon AT ALL.
The Holmes canon tends to be something I enjoy one step removed. I have read the original stories, but I re-read them rarely, preferring adaptations in other media.
Yeah, I'm weird.
Oh, and Solution is definitely AU fanfic, but it's well written AU fanfic, like the earlier Mary Russell books.
Did you ever watch the TV show (mini-series?) on what I think was A&E? If yes, did you think it captured the correct tone? I almost went digging for the books at the local library.

My favorite "AU Fanfic" of Holmes of THAT type is undoubtedly "Young Sherlock Holmes".
