Since it's going around as a meme, I'll play. The meme is named after this xkcd strip, in which the Saturn 5 rocket is described using only the thousand most commonly used words in the English Language.

Describe your job using only the ten hundred most common words:
In my day job, I write stuff to get people to give us money to make things that aren't, yet, but that could be, maybe. In my second job, I write stuff about things that aren't because it's fun, and people pay me so they can have the fun of reading what I wrote.

Want to try it? This text editor will automatically let you know if you've used a word outside the ten hundred allowed.

In my job, I run a thing that makes very hot water stuff that goes to where people need very hot stuff to make hot water to be warm and clean. I run another thing that makes very cold water that goes to where people want to be cool. I make them run right. I make them run safe. The state gives me money for doing that.

I work nights. Sometimes I work days. The people I make warm or cool are usually bad people in small rooms, but also the people who keep them there. Those people have guns, sometimes. So did the bad people, sometimes, but not here.

I work for a place that does things with computers for lots other places. We do all sorts of things that another place might want done with computers.

Right now my job is to tell the computers how to think for the people that work for the place I live in that make it so big money holding places move money between each other.

Our big thing not long ago was that people who have their money in one big money holding place and want to send some of that money to a friend who has their money in another big money holding place now don't have to wait until the end of the day for the money to move between big money holding places.

I start with a paper that tells me how computers are supposed to do things. Then I see if the computer does those things the right way. I tell people if the computer things don't work like they are supposed to do. Then I check them again once the not-working bits have been fixed.
