... Harry Harrison and his famous Stainless Steel Rat series!

My first Stainless Steel Rat book was actually The Stainless Steel Rat for President, when the series was veering steadily towards the Silly view of things (though not as badly TSSStW). I've still my own copy of that paperback omnibus, and it holds up pretty well, even if some bits show its age (a female criminal in the 300th century? Amazing!)

Maybe it's because of the quality slump in the later Rat books, but I've always been more fond of Jason dinAlt from the Deathworld trilogy.

Keith Laumer's Jaime Retief, or Poul Anderson's Dominic Flandry.

But Jason dinAlt is a Harrison character. :-)

And Retief and Flandry aren't. Was that a requirement?

You make a good point in the essay; any live-action Stainless Steel Rat production should involve Joss Whedon.
