... the Kickstarter for its "spiritual successor", City of Titans, has already hit its basic goal and is heading for its stretch goals. Sounds like fun? Go support it!
It's a neat idea... but they're just getting the money to pay for the tools. I don't think they're going to manage to create an MMO entirely on volunteer money.
Reading the two makes for some interesting comparisons. Both go on about how cool their games are going to be. A big difference, however, is that the JRPG kickstarter tells us about the world, about the music, and, most importantly, about the gameplay. The MMO kickstarter tells us a bit about the world and... that's it. There's nothing at all about the gameplay other than references to this super-flexible "socket system".
Now, here's a problem: Cryptic tried something very similar to this in City of Heroes prior to release. It didn't work. Given the opportunity, some players will exclusively load up on just offense or just defense which makes for characters that end up being non-viable. Then these players will bitch and moan about how badly broken the game is. Cryptic's solution was the archetype system cribbed almost verbatim from Champions vernacular. The result was a system that guided players into at least trying to make reasonably balanced characters the same way that a real live GM would in a real live RPG. That MWM is planning to repeat this mistake does not bode well for the game.
