... Autopope was correct, if I substitute "Disk Copy" for "Disk Utility" in his post. Make a Disk Image file and mount it when needed. Works like a charm.

Let me guess: you're not using OS/X 10.4, you've got an earlier release. (10.1? 10.2? ISTR they renamed/merged the utilities in 10.3.)

... not ALL of us are FABULOUSLY WEALTHY HUGO WINNING AUTHORS and so we can't just upgrade every time Apple snaps their fingers! :)

I am thinking of upgrading because the Bastards (something I rarely call Apple) have for reasons totally unknown and probably Insanely Stupid decided to make new versions of Quickslime...er, QuickTime work ONLY with later versions of the OS.
