.... specifically on the "mass-beam" approach. I'm interested in (A) the different types of mass beam one could use and have caught by a magnetic field/set of magnetic rings around a ship, (B) range and targeting that's reasonable in a context of, roughly, 30 years from now, and (C) power/acceleration possible. Anyone have pointers to any good papers on the subject? I did a Google but all I got in the first few pages were very general discussions of the concept which aren't very useful.

I was lucky enough to attend a panel on that very subject (mass-beam propulsion) at Norwescon just a couple of weeks ago.

The main speaker was G. David Nordley who has been doing an awful lot of work on that subject. You can find his web page here http://www.sfwa.org/members/Nordley/ and there is an email link at the bottom of the page which should allow you to get in touch with him to get more information on the subject.
