Your review didn't mention the 3rd book, Heirs of Empire - what's your take on that one?

Indeed. I enjoyed Heirs of Empire, though not as much as the first two.

I would definitely be interested in hearing what others thought.

MM's a good 'un, written well before Mr. Weber took an accidental dive off his back porch and broke both wrists before a deadline, resulting in him switching to speech recognition software and inflicting a drastic change on his prose style.

It does, however, embody some troubling political assumptions ...

Yeah, so MM is more or less okay. (It's only by book 3 that things have escalated into unquestioning hereditary monarchism ... fun to read about in SF/F, I suppose, but a little less comfortable to live with!)
