Your review didn't mention the 3rd book, Heirs of Empire - what's your take on that one?

Indeed. I enjoyed Heirs of Empire, though not as much as the first two.

I would definitely be interested in hearing what others thought.

That's pretty well my take on it as well. It was entertaining, but not as good as the first 2 books.

MM's a good 'un, written well before Mr. Weber took an accidental dive off his back porch and broke both wrists before a deadline, resulting in him switching to speech recognition software and inflicting a drastic change on his prose style.

It does, however, embody some troubling political assumptions ...

Well, that's true of so very many fantasy and SF stories.

In this case, Weber very carefully set the stage such that his main character didn't have a lot of CHOICE as to his overall political approach.

Yeah, so MM is more or less okay. (It's only by book 3 that things have escalated into unquestioning hereditary monarchism ... fun to read about in SF/F, I suppose, but a little less comfortable to live with!)

Compared to Mutineer's Moon, the Honor Harrington series is on a positively cosy scale of power.
