I'm looking for PDA units which are usefully visible in daylight conditions outdoors. The daylight visibility is a major requirement, along with WiFi built-in. I know about the super-expensive rugged things like the Recon line; I'm looking for something that isn't THAT pricey. Any suggestions? (I'll be posting this a couple other places, so don't be surprised if you see it in more than one place)...

I'm pretty happy with the Cingular 8125 (HTC Apache ODM for Cingular) phone/handheld. It's a low-speed CPU (which gives longer run between charges), windows mobile 5 phone. with a keyboard.

Reviews are out there... dont' have any complaints about the unit so far (still in my first week).

Back when I was reading ebooks on a borrowed iPAQ, I used to turn the backlight off and set the HTML to white text on a black background at a fairly large font size. It helped quite a lot, and saved battery too.

Then again, for normal operation it's probably not all that useful.

The problem you're going to face is that most of the pda's out there use TFT screens. All of which are going to give you trouble when using them in the outdoors during a sunny day.

I'm pretty happy with my Dell Axim x50v, which I think is now an x51v. It has WiFi, bluetooth, uses both non-Sony type memory cards and runs Windows Mobile.

I don't really have a problem with it outside, using a flip-cover case that I angle towards the sun which is enough shade to see things clearly.

Not sure on what you consider pricey but the regular prices range from $299 to $549 or so depending on processor and such.

I've had an IPAQ, 2 Palms and a Handspring Visor and the Axim is by far the best thing since super bouncy balls.

If you want PDA *sized*, I think you may be out of luck (and anything with a color screen is iffy anywy).

My old Philips Velo was pretty good, but it was discontinued when I got it, and I never did find a wi-fi card that'd work with it.

On the other hand, my Dana Wireless does well.

Define usefully visible in daylight conditions.

I've been VERY happy with my Palm T|X, and in most conditions except very high-background light (I'm looking into the afternoon sun while trying to read) is quite capable. If you can define your specifications further, I'll try to replicate them to see if this PDA suits your needs.
