As they say, there ARE two sides to all this. One side includes a superbillionaire doing Seig Heil salutes, supporting neo-Nazi groups, and taking over the largest government systems on the planet illegally and locking people out. The other side was generally in favor of helping all types of people get a more fair shake, within the admittedly sucky limits of regular government.
I'm sorry if the latter horrifies you so much that you think the solution was to elect a goddamn Nazi fanboy and his followers to run our country. Not sorry FOR you, of course -- this bed is yours to lie in -- but for everyone else that's going to have to put up with this psychopath's incompetent and arrogant destruction of the most powerful economy in the world, which he will almost certainly try to rectify by violence as much as by his traditional lies and obfuscation.
That includes my family, my friends, my employer, and a whole bunch of other people in my life who will be PERSONALLY affected by these lunatics' clear and unambiguous hatred for anything that's not putting dollars in their personal pockets.
I'm sixty-two years old. My grandparents' and parents' generation shed the blood of MILLIONS in order to stop these sons of bitches the last time it happened, and in my childhood, the word "Nazi" was the ultimate symbol of "this is evil personified". You didn't need to say more. Anyone who made that salute in a public forum would have been kicked off the stage faster than you could blink. A politician associating with people like that could kiss his career good-bye.
I cannot comprehend how so many people have ended up going down that exact same path AGAIN, this time in our own country -- following, even, the same "Christian-not-Christian" bullshit that claims Godliness while performing the work of evil incarnate.
Don't try to gaslight me on this. This isn't a matter of opinion on which people should agree to disagree, or negotiate on, or anything of the sort.
You support this absolutely unabashed power-grab by a sociopathic aging felonious grifter and the richest man in the world -- a guy who himself stayed here in the US illegally, comes from a wealthy background in apartheid South Africa, and is literally celebrating his dominance by parading the very salute of the Nazi party?
You are the enemy of me, my country, my family, my ideals. You are the goddamn Red Skull, Arnim Zola, every one of the death's-head wearing SS officers from every damn 1980s movie and TV series that ever looked for a human version of Satan. That's what you should be seeing when you look in your mirror, and if you don't, you're just damn good at self-delusion.
All the pious posturing about "corruption" in government is shown to be self-serving hypocrisy at this point, allowing Trump and his puppeteers to perpetrate the greatest, most corrupt, most complete violation of every purpose of the Constitution in the history of the USA.
There's no more pretense here. No more even threadbare imitation of a mask. They believe their blitzkreig assault on our government is so swift and shocking that they can't be stopped -- and they may be right.
All I can do is refuse to accept it.

(Watching this from the UK with fascinated horror as opinion polls show that Reform UK -- the fash party -- now has a higher share of voting intentions than Labour or the Conservative party they splintered from.)

I cannot bring myself to completely detest every single person who voted for him. Not all of them are pro-Nazi racists (though they have made it clear that Nazi racism isn't a game-over for them); some of them are just damn fools who didn't believe he'd really do what he said he was going to do, on the grounds that he failed to do a lot of what he said he'd do last time.
And, of course, he isn't going to do a lot that he said he'd do this time either. He isn't going to help bring food prices down. He isn't going to oversee the best economy America has ever had -- though he will doubtless claim it is.
Fascism is what happens when business and government march arm in arm. The GOP have become a fascist party, and the Democrats are well on their way to doing likewise.
We're leaving, albeit in stages. This is not lack of patriotism on our part; I'm still an Eagle Scout at heart. It is fear of what this country may be about to become, and a feeling of powerlessness to do anything to stop it. I'm in the second half of my seventh decade, with a significant amount of personal responsibility for others. I'm not going to give my life in an attempt to Do Something About It.
I'm not only afraid, I'm pissed, frustrated, and disgustipated. America has chosen not to be the country I love anymore. We're getting a divorce.
(H'mmm. I set out to write a sentence or two and this came pouring out. I think I'd better crosspost it to my own journal...)
