Apparently so, according to this.

Is this for real?

At least Disney apparently understands (many years too late, alas) that what we wanted were *SE*quels, not *PRE*quels.

Maybe they'll be smart enough to buy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy...

I saw that and was surprised...except that I wasn't really, because there's a lot of Star Wars at Disneyland now. Including Darth Vader. I just saw him yesterday.

Like you, I wonder if they will do the Thrawn plotline. I also wonder what they will do about casting.

It's an interesting question, what they'll do for the sequels. The C-canon materials (novels, etc.) continue the story from Return of the Jedi on through at least one more generation of characters, covering a LOT of material... but G-canon (or is it "D-canon" now?) is understood to be able to ignore C-canon at will, while at the same time importing anything from it that it wishes. So the sequel movies could follow the C-canon novels faithfully, pick and choose some elements from them while contradicting others, or go an entirely different direction.

Hopefully, whichever way they go, they'll hire some people who have a better understanding than George Lucas did, of what made his original movies great.

Maybe they'll skip to the younger generation and have Luke, Leia and Han in supporting roles, playing their real age. Recasting the original actors would be... difficult. The three original movies are too iconic.

True, but Abrams' reboot involved a kick up the timeline. Unless Disney is going to reboot or remake Star Wars 4, 5 & 6 (surely not!) they have to start from somewhere in Luke, Leia and Han's future, or pick a parallel set of characters and follow them.

As much as I like Zahn Trilogy, I have to wonder if it would be practical to turn into films. There is a lot of really good material to mine there if they decide to use it though. It would also make me quite happy if they chose to follow some of the other expanded universe material if it is more screen friendly. In any case a new star wars movie has me intrigued, especially if George Lucas isn't allowed to do anything with it.

Well, people will still go to see them regardless. So therefore there is a quote which I believe is wholly appropriate:
Han Solo: "You can tell Jabba that I've got his money"

I'm actually kind of hopeful about this. The films and their receptions will be as mixed as the Prequels no matter what, because people have inflated Star Wars to mythic status, and will be expecting nothing less than three ultra-epic cinema masterpieces. And that's not mentioning all the people who will be crushingly disappointed that the book storyline they wanted wasn't made. (And seeing the number of comments clamouring for the 'Thrawn trilogy', I'll just jump that one up my reading list)

Disney has the skills, the money, the talent and the savvy to make worthy successor films. Here's hoping they do.
