Only four stars? (cue author rant of betrayal, tragedy, doom)
I actually saw an author (seriously!) getting mad at someone for posting a four star review. I was sitting there staring with my mouth open, saying "WTF???"
If you had changed your name to Rye, you'd have gotten five stars :^)
That said, I seldom write reviews and never lightly. Phoenix Rising has its flaws (some from its genre roots, some of its own), and I'm not going to give a work five stars unless it's truly spectacular. And I detest that type of public simplified ratings too. But Amazon seemed to require them (though I might be wrong in that).
I picked the book up yesterday, and didnt notice until I got it home and cataloged it that they have the typo on the spine, so if you ever make it to Portland Oregon for a signing, I will expect "Rye" to be there too...grin.
Heck, you could simply mail it to me with a SASE and I'll sign it without having to go to Portland Oregon, which is (barring Phoenix Rising turning into a NYT bestseller and making me rich) extremely unlikely.
No, I don't have bookplates; I've done all my signatures in person on individual books, at least thus far. As a purchaser of books, I never liked the "bookplate" bit because it never felt to me like the book was SIGNED. He signed a piece of paper which got stuck inside the book. A trivial difference maybe, but it felt nontrivial to me.
I ususally slip it into the book, and hope that I can either see the author in person (thus freeing up the bookplate for another volume I may aquire in the future) or I find the freakin book that is hiding from me after the author leaves town.
Its difficult to take a lot of books on an airplane, your luggage always gets inspected because its dense and resembles some devices or something... and its a hassle to FedEx them to the hotel... haul them around .. I ususally can accost an author and request a signed bookplate or three without having to run back to the room, find the books if I brought the specific author, and then hunt them down again. The last few large Cons I went to, I was a PA, so I had even less chance to do that, (shhh, I be huntin Awthors!)
I just have too many books in my place, and some have gone feral on me.. skulking around, hiding, teasing the cat...
