I hereby resolve ...

To show NO TOLERANCE for those less fortunate... to RE-DEFINE MORALITY to suit my short term objectives... and to CONQUER the PLANET EARTH and make all the inhabitants my slaves.

Oh, wait, those were DOGBERT'S resolutions.

I swear to bring the world revolution!

No, no, that's Utena...

Oh, HERE'S my list.

1) To end this year significantly lighter than I am now. Currently I am between 215 and 220 lbs (about 98-99 kilos) and I should weigh around 180 -185. I know myself too well to resolve absolutely to reach THAT weight by the end of this year, but I do insist that I get at least a quarter of the way there -- say, 10 pounds. If I can do better, great. But no more increases!
2) To do much better at sending out snailmal materials. I'm terrible at it, and then I get feeling guilty, which pushes it back in my head. I have to get it together and remember to send out all the stuff I owe people.
3) To get significant exercise every day. Exceptions for days I'm travelling -- they're just too much -- and days I'm actually physically ill. No exception for "oh, I'm just tired".

Three should be enough to cause me remorse and guilt throughout the year, right?

There's really no point to bring the world revolution. I'm fairly sure it's revolving already. Something to do with conservation of angular momentum, I believe.

But ...

if you CAN feel the spin, people will be barfing all over the place.

If you could feel the spin, the _planet_ would be 'barfing' all over space.

I'm going to join in #1 and #3. I actually lost about ten pounds this past year then backslid and regained five. I stopped going to the work out room, when for a while I was doing it every day (sometimes even waking up early enough to do a little time before work).

I'm going to push though I want to end the year either close to 200 (say 200-205) or even less.

I think I'm going to have to tell myself I have to write down what exercise I do. The old, track it or it won't improve rule.

You do guilt?

I wouldn't have guessed it...

Weight...in space it is relative

All we have to do is to get somebody to invent real, public space travel, and you won't have to lose any weight. Or better yet, get somebody to invent suspensor chairs like Baron Harkkonnen in Dune</>...then neither of us will have to lose weight.

My only New Year's Resolution this year is to do at least three days a week at the health club.

Bananaslug.

Well actually you've already lost the weight. Since all frames of reference of uniform motion are valid, just pick one where your weight is less. Space travel won't help _you_, since your frame of reference hasn't changed, as far as you are concerned, you aren't moving.

exercise

Judi and I have been dealing with this ourselves. We exercise at home (don't have time for anything else). My philosophy for exercise is to be lazy and do as little as necessary. In other words, I try to get the most bang for the buck. I'd check out exrx.net. But, here's some ideas. . . .

Weight bearing exercises are useful for building muscle mass (which burns calories) Stay between 6-12 reps,3 days/week and you'll build muscle. I'd pick exercises that work as many muscles as possible: squats, pushups, pullups are good. Lesser exercises that target fewer muscles and more than 12 reps will waste your time as far as muscle building is concerned.

If you can spend a little bit, buy dirt cheap free-weights and again pick exercises that use as many muscles as possible (check out exrx.net or ask me).

To prevent injury while exercising, stretching does not help. Warming up (aerobic exercise) will help.

With aerobic exercise the intensity doesn't matter much (walking versus running), distance(or energy) matters. 5 miles walking or running is roughly the same thing -- health wise. This also means it helps to simply design your life so you have to walk a lot (park far away from the store, etc.). I am under the impressions that a good distance to aim for is roughly 5 miles of any activity for a week.

With weight lifting and aerobic exercise there are lots of ideas like target heart rate or some odd regimen of lifting weights. I wouldn't worry about any of that. (if you wanted to compete in sports then it may matter)
