It occurs to me that the Vengeance in your Grand Central Arena books would understand Lovecraft's view. It's not that far from their own.

Except that they think they can fight back.

Sort of. The main difference is that the Vengeance believe that the Voidbuilders are basically no different than we are, just got to the super-high tech FIRST and are just using it to keep us distracted and weak.

Lovecraft's universe posits that the Great Old Ones are beings of an entirely different ORDER -- not merely wielding unknown, but UNKNOWABLE, powers beyond our ability to understand or control.

Ah. But the Vengeance could be wrong. :-)

Though the existence of the Shadeweavers tends to argue against that.

I do wonder what their (the Vengeance) take on Lovecraft's ideas would be.

Well, taken from a dispassionate PoV, yes, they could be wrong.

Knowing this is a Smithian universe, we know that there's no way ANY alien can be that far above us.

Their take? "By the Arena I sure hope he's wrong."

And I suspect the Faith's reaction would be utter horror.

BTW, you reminded m of when I first discovered Lovecraft. I think it was the same Ballantine collections that your first Lovecraft was part of.

Silly me, I once finished reading pone of them to realize that:
A. I was alone in an old house
B: it was a dark and stormy night
C: it was 1 am

needless to say I was utterly creeped out.
