I had something on my Wish List which one of my family duly purchased for me. Alas, I cannot use it.

Specifically, Civilization IV for Mac.

Upon looking at the box, it appears my current machines are far too puny and girly-man to handle the marvelousness that they offer.

So I will have to wait until whenever I can afford to get myself a new machine to play it.

However, it's still a good gift. It's been a good Christmas.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Etc., to you all.

Merry Christmas!

And then you get to play two games -- Civ IV and musical computers, where you hand down your current one to the next person in line...

I know of exactly what you speak ... I found a copy in an Apple store I believe two days after the official release date, and saw the specs I'd read about in comp.sys.mac.games.strategic were no cruel hoax; the PowerBook I'd bought two months earlier wouldn't play it. I've since downloaded the Civ IV Demo, but haven't quite worked up the courage to open it up and see if the Minimum Specs really are minimums, or just preferred minimums. (I ran -- not very well, but acceptably -- Railroad Tycoon II on a computer with a third of the minimum processor speed and I think half the video memory, to the delight and surprise of one of the programmers.)

In the meantime at least I'm not through my Victoria fix, and that'll run even on steam-powered Macs ...

Civ IV is an awsome game. I'm being a Philistine and running it on a PC (mostly because I don't have a Mac) and enjoying every minute of it. They keep all the good bits from Civ III (which is the only one of the series I didn't enjoy much) and add some extra new good bits.

My only regret is that I forgot to grab the DVD when I was packing up my computers to house sit for my cousin an hour's drive from home. I'm also seriously considering that 2-hour round trip just to pick it up...

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Marvelous Solstice and all the rest. Enjoy the holidays!

Go ahead and try it anyway. I didn't have too much trouble running it on my rev B iMac with 1 GB RAM, as long as I kept to standard size maps.

You probably have to turn off animations and such, but I've seen reports about it being playable on later G4 PowerBooks.

Try running it with all the videos and animations turned off. If you're not using the 3D, I'll bet you can get it running. It's worth it - truly an outstanding game.

civ IV is great but civ III is also great

Civ IV is great. I think of it as a cleaned and polished version of Civ III.

If you can play Civ III on your mac that should keep you satisifed for a while. CIV IV though nicer is not a revolutionary step above civ III.
